I must confess I like surprises, good surprises that is. Drew’s surprise marriage proposal to Avery certainly qualifies as a good surprise. Photographer Leah Dorr was on hand to capture the unfolding drama.

Drew’s Surprise Marriage Proposal to Avery

From photographer Leah Dorr: Drew contacted me about photographing his surprise marriage proposal to Avery. I was excited from the beginning-this guy is the real deal! Avery and Drew both live in Colorado. They were planning a vacation to Daytona Beach, Florida where they spent many spring breaks together while in college.

He wanted to propose where their romance blossomed. I was honored to be a part of it! He proposed on the beach. After Avery’s enthusiastic “Yes” we hopped in the car and drove to the boardwalk and ferris wheel for their engagement photo session. These two are in love and it shows. There is no question that Avery was surprised. She kept looking at her ring in disbelief; she was now someone’s fiancé. I would talk to her about the engagement session details, and she was nodding and smiling, but I could tell that the only thing running through her mind was “I am engaged!” It was a surreal moment for her.

May Avery and Drew have a blissful life of butterflies, excitement and hand holding. Congratulations, love birds!

From Avery: Drew and I met in high school during our senior year. We quickly became best friends. He repeatedly asked me out, but I was stubborn and played hard to get. After graduating high school we went to different colleges, but stayed in touch…as friends. A few months into our freshman year we met at Daytona Beach to visit a mutual friend. I couldn’t resist dating him any longer!

We dated long distance, making drives between South Carolina and Florida when we could and meeting halfway in a tiny Georgia town when we couldn’t. After two years of long distance dating, we both transferred back to Colorado to finish college. We graduated last year.

This year was busy adjusting to post graduate life. I was thrilled when Drew surprised me with a Daytona trip to celebrate our 4 1/2 year anniversary. We have tried to return to Daytona yearly so the trip did not raise my antenna. I was clueless about his plans. On the last night of our trip we took a walk on the beach. As we were reminiscing, I jokingly told him he needed to ask me to be his girlfriend again. As soon as we stepped onto the beach he said he wouldn’t ask that, but instead asked me to marry him! Keeping to tradition, Drew got down on one knee and pulled the engagement ring from his pocket! I was surprised and so excited. I mumbled a yes before giving him the biggest kiss. He wasn’t done with surprises yet. He hired an amazing photographer to capture the entire event. Immediately after the wedding proposal we had our engagement shoot. It was all a dream come true!

We extend a special thank you to Leah Dorr Photography for sharing Avery and Drew’s surprise marriage proposal photos with us.
